PROPOSED BIODIVERSITY RESERVE

1,380.8 km² | Designated in 2009

The Quaqtaq-Kangirsuk proposed biodiversity reserve (Réserve de biodiversité projetée de Quaqtaq-Kangirsuk) protects many archaeological sites of significant cultural interest. One site contains the remains of two longhouses, one of which is among the largest in Nunavik. This reserve is also within the range of the Leaf River migratory caribou herd.

Main conservation objectives
To protect an area representative of the physiographic unit characteristic of the Ungava Peninsula natural province and the Vachon River Plateau natural region. Also aims to protect territories identified as essential and important subsistence areas for Nunavik Inuit.
