Phase 2: Ongoing

Discussion of precise boundaries and development

As part of the ongoing consultations on Nunavik’s 20% protected areas target, Phase 2 will bring together representatives of communities mutually concerned by the protected areas with the objectives to :

  • Discuss and establish the precise and definite boundaries of each protected area;
  • Discuss the concept of protected areas network development.

Pre-engagement session

Between September 2024 and March 2025, local organizations and elected officials of each community will be invited to take part in a virtual Pre-engagement session with the objective to :

  • Share information about protected areas in Nunavik;
  • Provide feedback from the Phase 1 consultations;
  • Explain Phase 2 objectives, steps and timeline;
  • Launch a call for project proposals involving members of the concerned communities for field visits to the protected areas, according to pre-defined parameters.

Engagement sessions

Engagement sessions will bring together representatives from communities concerned by the same protected areas with the objectives to:

  • Ensure the precise boundaries of each protected area align with the conservation objectives;
  • Discuss the concept of development for each protected area.

The representatives, appointed by the communities, will take part in an Engagement session in a host community to collectively discuss the protected areas in their surrounding areas.

During Phase 2, each community will also be invited to submit a project for a field visit by its members to a protected area of its choice.
